COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Community leaders and residents gathered last Friday for the opening of Fire Station 10 on South Court Street. The new 22,000 square foot facility cost $19 million and houses rescue units (Units 91 and 96 and two EMS pumper trucks, Engines 7 and 10) along with the city’s first safe haven baby box to boost emergency response.  WSFA 12
  • The National Association of Letter Carriers is hosting its annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive today to support local food banks by collecting non-perishable items left near mailboxes—donations will be processed locally by Heart of Alabama Food Bank staff after carriers complete their rounds.  WSFA 12

CRIME NEWS

  • Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey announced that Gregory Hunt will be executed using nitrogen gas on June 10 for the 1988 killing of Karen Lane — making him the sixth person set for this method following four cases in Alabama and one in Louisiana.  WSFA 12
  • Police are asking for help to identify an unknown man seen on cameras before a fatal shooting that took place on May 8 on Atlanta Highway near a Chevron gas station; he wore black pants with white designs, a black button-down shirt, a light blue shirt with graphics, blue gloves + a Nike ski mask, and the victim was pronounced dead on scene.  AL.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • Alabama Archbishop Thomas J. Rodi welcomed the election of the first U.S.-born pope, Pope Leo XIV, who was chosen on May 8 at the Vatican. He said the new pontiff is known for his sound judgement+ humility and strength and is expected to focus on the dignity of all people.  AL.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Equal Justice Initiative announced 37 winners of the Montgomery Public Schools Legacy Scholarship from eight high schools — each student will receive $10,000 to help further their studies. Over 200 community members, teachers, and family gathered at Legacy Hall to celebrate the awardees.  WSFA 12
