COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Montgomery Habitat for Humanity will hold a home dedication ceremony on Wednesday, May 21 at 10:00 a.m. at 832 Millard Fuller Drive for the Mayo and Foxhall/Scott families. The event will honor their move from renting to homeownership — a key part of the Blitz Build Initiative to add affordable homes in New Hope Village.  Montgomery Chamber
  • The Shoppes at EastChase hosted its first farmers market on Saturday morning even though rain fell, and visitors bought fresh fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs and plants. The market will run every Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon—until September 15.  WAKA 8

CRIME NEWS

  • Montgomery police are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred last night near Jackson Hospital on the 2000 block of Locust Street — the victim was pronounced dead at the scene and details including the victim’s name and age have not yet been released.  WAKA 8
  • Gloria Crews, a 64-year-old Montgomery grandmother, was shot dead near Virginia Loop Road on Mother’s Day a year ago—police say the killing was gang-related—and no arrest has been made as officials offer a $21,500 reward for tips.  WSFA 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Protestors and hemp business owners gathered at Court Square to oppose HB445—a bill nearly approved that bans smokable hemp products—and warned that if signed by the Governor, it will hurt their operations when it takes effect on January 1.  WSFA 12
  • The headquarters for the U.S. Air Force Enlisted Professional Military Education moved from Gunter Annex to Maxwell Air Force Base’s Academic Circle—Col. Damian Schlussel and other leaders held a ribbon cutting at building 1400 on May 9.  WAKA 8
