COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Family Guidance Center of Alabama will host a community wellness & safety event this Saturday that offers fun, interactive learning for local families and boosts neighborhood wellbeing.  WSFA 12

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Davis Theatre will present 'Auntee Pam’s Family Affair' on Saturday, May 30 (a family-friendly performance) at its local venue, inviting community members to enjoy a lively theater experience.  WSFA 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ground has been broken for the new 320,000 sqft Percy Julian High School campus at North Eastern Boulevard — the project replacing the current campus and featuring a 120,000 sqft athletics area, football field, storm shelter and 1,000 parking spaces. Construction will finish in 2028.  WAKA 8
  • The Equal Justice Initiative named 35 high school seniors winners of the Montgomery Public Schools Legacy Scholarship yesterday at Elevation Convening Center (Mountaintop Ballroom). Each recipient received $10,000 while two additional seniors were awarded $5,000 through essay contests and interviews.  WAKA 8
  • Award-winning children’s author and illustrator Dan Santat visited The Montgomery Academy on May 5 — engaging kindergarten to fourth-grade students with dynamic book readings and creative art displays, including a giant Humpty Dumpty sculpture — and he highlighted their shared love of reading.  WAKA 8
  • The YMCA of Greater Montgomery hosted the 67th Jimmy Hitchcock Award banquet at Frazier Church yesterday, honoring Anna Russo from Montgomery Catholic and Robert Ashworth from Montgomery Academy for excellence in sports, academics and community service. Russo will join the University of North Alabama and Ashworth plans Texas Christian University.  WAKA 8
  • Montgomery Chick-fil-A manager Angela Gipson, with over 28 years of experience, is hosting a free career coaching workshop at Bethel Primitive Baptist Church on Old Selma Road Saturday, May 16 at 11 a.m. The event will cover resume building, interview skills, and job interview etiquette for local job seekers.  WSFA 12
  • Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama held an awards night on May 12 at the RSA Activity Center to honor middle school teams in its Future of Mobility STEM program. Floyd Middle School won overall, marking progress in the partnership with Montgomery Public Schools and Ed Farm that fosters automotive engineering skills.  Montgomery Chamber

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Montgomery Police Department holds a National Police Week ceremony outside the downtown station to honor 30 fallen officers, including Corporal Hathcock who served over two decades; Mayor Reed stressed that their sacrifice continues to guide efforts for officer safety and wellness.  WSFA 12

SPORTS NEWS

  • The top ranked Glenwood School beat Lee-Scott Academy in two playoff semifinal games (16-0 and 14-3) and will face Gordo in a state finals rematch, while other high school baseball contests in Classes 4A, 2A and AA produced tight series with decisive games set later today at Paterson Field (Montgomery).  AL.com
  • Crimson Tide coach Kalen DeBoer said after a 38-3 Rose Bowl loss to Indiana that the team will work on improving its run game and overall execution as it prepares for the season. He credited Indiana coach Curt Cignetti for building a well-rounded team — a performance that offers valuable lessons for Alabama.  AL.com
  • WNCF ABC 32 will show season-opening games starting with the Cricket MEAC/SWAC Challenge on Saturday, Aug. 29 at 6:30 p.m. from Mercedes-Benz Stadium (Atlanta) and contests with Alabama and Auburn on Saturday, Sep. 5 from Bryant-Denny and Mercedes-Benz Stadium, with the SEC Championship airing on Dec. 5 at 3 p.m.  WAKA 8
