CULTURE NEWS

  • Born in Montgomery, singer Clarence Carter (90) recorded classic R&B hits at FAME Studios and enriched our local scene. FAME GM Rodney Hall confirmed his death due to pneumonia and recalled his four-decade career.  AL.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Five Montgomery Public Schools teams were honored this week at Hyundai's Manufacturing the Future Awards, where the automaker recognized excellence in manufacturing education across local schools.  WSFA 12
  • ASU Athletics and the City of Montgomery are hosting a free Youth Sports Camp - registration is now open for local youth, with details on the camp schedule to be announced.  WSFA 12
  • Faulkner University in Montgomery will launch 3 new engineering programs in fall 2026 that offer hands-on learning, small class sizes and a focus on ethics plus technical training. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Rep. Marilyn Lands said she opposes legislation that would limit the agency’s ability to test for chemicals entering local waterways from Georgia mills and stressed that safe drinking water is essential for families using the Tennessee River.  Alabama Daily News

  • Montgomery Police Department is hosting its Get Fit for Duty event to help aspiring officers prepare for a career in law enforcement by offering physical training and guidance (details provided by the department).  WSFA 12

  • Hundreds of Montgomery residents gathered at The Shoppes at East Chase on May 14 to visit Action 8's annual River Region Healthy Living Expo, where over 50 organizations provided wellness services such as blood pressure and blood sugar screenings (including IV hydration and weight loss education).  WAKA 8
  • Callie’s Apothecary on Atlanta Highway in Montgomery will soon sell Alabama’s first legal medical cannabis in nearly 95 years under strict ID and cannabis card checks — the store will offer gel cubes, lozenges and tinctures while limiting the sales floor for privacy.  WSFA 12

SPORTS NEWS

  • Baseball semifinals ended Wednesday as Glenwood swept Lee-Scott and Gordo outpaced Piedmont, setting up a Class 3A championship rematch next week. Thursday at Montgomery's Paterson Field, both AISA series held Game 3, starting at (10:30 a.m.) for Class AA and (1:30 p.m.) for Class A.  AL.com
  • AHSAA announced the 2026 TV Network Game of the Week schedule for football on Alabama Public Television; it begins on Thursday, Aug. 20 with Montgomery Catholic visiting Central-Phenix City—further matchups feature contests with teams such as Hoover and Auburn.  AL.com
