Good morning, Montgomery. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 16th of May.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The YMCA of Greater Montgomery launched a campaign today urging families to put down distractions and assign a water watcher for pool safety. Pools will open this weekend at local locations—prompting the Y to stress that 88% of children drown with an adult present.  WSFA 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lawmakers enacted many major bills this session, including cutting the grocery sales tax to 2% (saving an estimated $122 million per year), giving state employees paid parental leave, creating new workers' compensation and pharmacy reimbursement measures, and approving an anti-crime package that expands police immunity. They also set up additional borrowing for prison construction, reformed immigration laws, made Juneteenth a state holiday, reorganized the veterans department and Birmingham Water Works board, and established portable benefits for gig workers while passing record state budgets.  Alabama Daily News
  • The Montgomery Police Department honored fallen officers who sacrificed for the city during National Police Week, hosting a ceremony that recognized their bravery+ community members reflected on the legacy of their service.  WSFA 12
  • Alabama lawmakers wrapped up the legislative session and finalized plans for future state policies while Gov. Ivey signed a bill imposing strict regulations on hemp and THC products. Local projects such as the new Old Cloverdale Village shopping strip—expected to be complete by the end of the year—and Montgomery Ballet's move to a permanent home add momentum to these government changes.  WSFA 12
  • Lawmakers proposed changes that would shift part of SNAP costs to Alabama, increasing the state’s share from an initial 5%—about $90 million a year—to up to 15% from fiscal year 2028 and raising administrative costs from 50% to 75%. Feeding Alabama and state representatives warned the plan may reduce benefits for over 700,000 recipients and strain local budgets, with the proposal marked up by the House Agriculture Committee today.  Alabama Daily News
  • Members of the Alabama House voted down a bill that would have made Class B & C misdemeanor warrants expire after ten years on Wednesday in the final legislative session. Sponsored by Sen. Arthur Orr after a Morgan County mother was arrested on an 11-year-old warrant, some lawmakers argued the measure would burden local courts and discourage self-reporting.  Alabama Daily News
