COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, thousands are expected to gather at the State Capitol after buses full of participants arrive from across the Southeast, joining the All Roads Lead to the South movement. The event features a 9 a.m. prayer at Selma’s Edmund Pettus Bridge and a 1 p.m. rally in Montgomery.  WSFA 12
  • The YMCA is hosting Splash Bash today from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at several local branches — a free event with music, games, food, and water safety tips for all ages.  WAKA 8
  • This weekend, the Montgomery Biscuits offer baseball games, great food, and family fun at the local ballpark (with planned community activities adding extra excitement) for fans attending the event.  WSFA 12
  • The Montgomery Bicycle Club set up an energizer station outside the Alabama Capitol to support Bike to Work Week during National Bike Month — handing out free t-shirts, coffee, muffins and cold beverages this morning.  WAKA 8

CULTURE NEWS

  • Montgomery-born soul singer Clarence Carter, known for hits like ‘Patches’ and ‘Strokin’, died Wednesday of natural causes. Born blind and recording at Muscle Shoals, he was a local music figure whose work reached many (his influence spanned the community).  WAKA 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • DAS North America visited Pike Road High School to support its growing workforce development and advanced manufacturing education programs. The firm praised students’ enthusiasm and previewed plans for a new SMART Factory facility (designed to enhance real-world skills), which will connect education with industry.  Montgomery Chamber
  • Nacole Baxley, Andreda Young and Anita McGowin retired from Redland Elementary on May 13 — their legacy of teamwork and care transforms the school community after decades of dedication to teaching.  Elmore Autauga News
  • A summer camp focused on drone technology and AI will run June 1-5 in Montgomery at Fresh Anointing House of Worship (6000 Monticello Drive). The 30-slot camp offers hands-on experience and digital media projects from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with lunch and snacks provided.  WAKA 8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sen. Katie Britt recognized the late Cpl. David Hathcock—who served with the Montgomery Police Department for 20 years—on the Senate floor during National Police Week. He died in February following a November crash while on duty.  WSFA 12

HEALTH NEWS

  • Move Montgomery and A Fine & Dandy Affair have partnered to launch a 5K Wellness Run/Walk that kicks off this weekend's festive events in Montgomery. The run aims to promote physical activity and community wellness.  WSFA 12

  • On Monday, May 11, Troy’s Trojan Tour stopped in Montgomery when head coach Gerad Parker hosted his annual golf tournament at Wynlakes Golf Club—local fans enjoyed a spirited day of competition.  WSFA 12
