COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Millbrook Police Department is hosting a free Junior Police Academy for local youth (limited to 25 students per session) to experience hands-on law enforcement activities; sessions run June 8-12 and June 22-26.  Elmore Autauga News

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Ben Moore Hotel in Montgomery, once a refuge for Black residents and Civil Rights leaders, was named one of 11 endangered historic places by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as part of America’s 250th anniversary. The Conservation Fund announced help last November to restore the landmark (details pending).  WSFA 12
  • The Montgomery Zoo hosts its third annual ZooBrews event today, where adults 21 and older can enjoy beer sampling, food trucks & live entertainment at the zoo.  WSFA 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gov. Ivey has announced a patriotic summer reading challenge for Alabama students from kindergarten through eighth grade. Participants must read six books exploring America’s history, heroes and values and mail their reading logs with responses by Aug. 1.  WSFA 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Attorney General Steve Marshall conceded defeat in the Senate race after a hard-fought campaign against Barry Moore and Jared Hudson. Moore & Hudson will face each other in a runoff on June 16.  AL.com
  • Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall conceded in the GOP Senate primary on May 20 after finishing third, marking the end of his campaign bid for the nomination. Runoff candidates Barry Moore and Jared Hudson will face each other on June 16 as voters decide the contest.  WAKA 8
  • The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency hosted a joint news conference with officials from six Gulf Coast states to launch a boating safety initiative ahead of Memorial Day weekend in honor of National Safe Boating Week. The effort aims to cut preventable boating incidents through education and enforcement.  WSFA 12

HEALTH NEWS

  • Kroger is recalling certain seasoned croutons sold in local stores after the FDA warned of a salmonella risk from milk powder in the seasoning; customers should return affected packages with best if used by dates through April 7 (no illnesses reported).  WSFA 12

  • The Montgomery Regional Airport will host its 3rd Annual MGM Runway 5K on Saturday, May 30 at 7:30 a.m. Runners will experience a unique course featuring the airport grounds and views of the MGM terminal.  WAKA 8
