- ➤ After three years in temporary spaces, the Salvation Army of Montgomery announced it has secured its permanent home on Carter Hill Road at the former Church of Jesus Christ property next to JAG High School and across from the Midtown YMCA. While the building is being renovated for administrative services for youth, seniors and others — its food pantry, clothing closet and worship center remain open, and the organization will soon seek a new shelter and soup kitchen location. - ➤ The Montgomery Southern Poverty Law Center is hosting a community block party today that features art and activism for local residents—an event designed to bring the community together. WSFA 12
- ➤ The Independence Volunteer Fire Department will host its 'Red, White & Revved Up' Car Show and Fish Fry on Saturday, August 2 at 1702 County Road 40 West in Prattville to raise funds for emergency services—vehicle entries cost $25 (with a $10 discount for military and first responders) and fish fry plates are $15 while local businesses are invited to sponsor and vend. - ➤ On May 23, the Spring Chicken Festival in Pike Road and the Montgomery Symphony Orchestra’s free Jubilee Pops Concert at the Alabama Dept. of Archives and History took place while the Montgomery Zoo hosted Animal Enrichment Day with a visit from the Montgomery United Football Club. Upcoming activities include Teen Mayfest and a Sneaker Ball at Union Station Train Shed plus the Sun Belt Baseball Championship at Riverwalk Stadium – events spanning the long Memorial Day weekend through May 26. - ➤ State prison officials recaptured 38-year-old escapee Stephen Murphy—who had walked away from his assigned job on Tuesday—on May 23 at 8:18 a.m. at Commerce and Tallapoosa streets near the Renaissance Hotel and Convention Center; he is serving time for a robbery conviction in Morgan County. - ➤ Autauga County Schools is running a free summer feeding program under the USDA’s Summer Food Service Program to give children 18 or younger ten days of breakfast and lunch—families can pick up meals at Marbury High School or Prattville High School on May 29, June 5, June 16, June 26, July 7, and July 17 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Families must pre-register and will receive a QR code for each child to collect the meals. - ➤ The National Weather Service has forecast a Level 1 risk of isolated severe storms—bringing possible damaging winds, hail, and heavy rain—for parts of Alabama today, including Montgomery, with nearly the entire state at risk on Sunday.
