COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Today, current and former Marines from the Townsend Detachment of the Marine Corps League gathered at 7:30 a.m. to honor 500 fallen Marines by placing American flags at gravesites in 10 cemeteries in the River Region. They mapped the graves using Google Earth plus are raising funds to cover the $4 cost per flag and continue the tradition. WSFA 12
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ One pedestrian died and another was injured in a collision between two vehicles and two pedestrians on the service road in the 900 block of East South Boulevard at 8:42 p.m. Saturday — police are investigating the cause as the injured victim is treated at a local hospital. WAKA 8
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Today, AUM’s research team has developed Drishti—an AI tool that converts hand gestures into text using a computer webcam. The tool helps those with hearing or speech impairments and will soon support additional languages. WSFA 12
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey signed 33 final bills and two resolutions on May 21 to end the legislative session—bringing her total count to 287 bills and 147 resolutions from nearly 1,500 proposals—and set new policies on health care, law enforcement, tax, and housing. Alabama Daily News
- ➤ The Alabama State Employees’ Insurance Board is looking for a new CEO to replace William Ashmore, who announced his retirement in March and will stay until a successor is named. The board is managing a budget boost for fiscal year 2026 that raised the rate to $1,025 per employee—a figure lower than the 5% increase requested—and will interview candidates in June after accepting applications through May 30. - ➤ Alabama has launched a free digital mental health tool called CredibleMind in partnership with state and county health departments. This AI-powered platform gives Montgomery residents quick access to mental health tips and support — it aims to lower wait times and reduce stigma. WSFA 12
- ➤ The PBS documentary Conquering Cervical Cancer features Alabama’s Operation 'Wipe Out' — an initiative that began in Chambers County to fight cervical cancer through HPV vaccination, regular screenings and timely follow-up care, and the effort may serve as a model for similar programs nationwide.
