  • Neighbors near the old Floyd Middle Magnet School campus told city planners in a workshop held yesterday their ideas for making the area more connected and walkable — and the master plan will use these suggestions to guide the revitalization of the campus on LeBron Road.  WAKA 8
  • Last Friday, a Summer Fund and Food Drive at Renfroe's Market on Eastchase Parkway allowed local residents to donate non-perishable food items or money for the Heart of Alabama Food Bank — local restaurants were also asked to help clean up. In other local news, Alex City Schools updated plans for a new high school after a decade of planning and Montgomery TechLab launched its first defense accelerator cohort to boost local innovation.  WSFA 12

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Alabama hemp product retailers are confused after Gov. Ivey signed a law that will enforce new rules on smokable hemp and gummies starting July 1 and possibly January 1—business owners say they have not received clear guidance from the ABC Board. At the Green Room in Montgomery, owners warn that the unclear dates could wipe out 75% of sales for their best-selling product—forcing uncertainty in orders and planning.  AL.com

CRIME NEWS

  • Corrections officer Braxton Kee pleaded guilty to one count of depriving rights for his role in the death of Tony Mitchell, a mentally ill inmate who froze to death in January 2023 in a concrete cell at Walker County jail lacking bedding and running water; he was one of 14 employees implicated in the case (he worked 10 nights during Mitchell’s detention).  Alabama Daily News

  • A number of weekend events are taking place in the River Region—this includes a Summer Night Art Walk on Friday in Auburn, Pridefest in Opelika and Auburn, and the Southern Soul Music Fest in Opelika—and free fishing at Gateway Park in Montgomery, Santuck Flea Market in Wetumpka, plus a worship service called The Outpouring at the Riverwalk Amphitheater.  WAKA 8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Alabama State Treasurer Young Boozer, the state's longest-serving treasurer, announced this week he will run for reelection and cited his record in managing finances — including negotiating a long term settlement for the PACT college savings plan and streamlining operations in the Treasurer’s Office.  Alabama Daily News

HEALTH NEWS

  • At a meeting in Montgomery on June 4, board members of the education employees health insurance program noted a worst-case shortfall of between $360 million and $418 million for fiscal year 27 (with a nearly $490 million gap expected in fiscal 28) driven by rising claims costs, flu activity, and other factors. Staff said they will review updated data in September and consider a range of options to address the potential gap.  Alabama Daily News
