COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Montgomery Humane Society introduced Luigi—an 8-week-old black domestic shorthair kitten who loves exploring and Boone—an 11-month-old terrier mix known for his gentle nature who has been at the shelter since October 2024. Both are available for adoption if you are looking to add a new pet to your family.  WAKA 8

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Four 17-year-old boys were rescued Monday after they were reported missing on the Cahaba River when their inflatable pool was damaged by swift currents—officials said the teens wisely walked along the riverbank until search teams using helicopters and drones located them.  AL.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Montgomery County Historical Society received a $75,000 grant from the Alabama Historical Commission to upgrade the historic Figh-Pickett House—transforming its third floor into a permanent exhibit space—and will add original educational materials and community programs that connect local history to larger state events.  Montgomery Chamber
  • The Alabama Black Belt Adventures Association has launched its second annual Black Belt Road Trip Photo Contest for summer road trip photos taken in the 23-county region to win prizes. Entries must include people and be submitted online — winners are chosen by public vote.  WSFA 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The National Baptist Congress of Christian Education is hosting a convention in Montgomery from June 15 to 20 to celebrate its 119th anniversary.  WSFA 12

HEALTH NEWS

  • A local church has partnered with (Remote Area Medical) to launch a free health clinic in Montgomery. The Alabama Department of Public Health said that 17.5% of residents lack health insurance (versus 13.6% nationally).  WSFA 12

SPORTS NEWS

  • Officials from Auburn and Alabama said a $2.8B settlement will let colleges pay athletes—each school may share up to $20.5 million this year and $2.7B over the next decade—which followed nearly five years after Grant House sued the NCAA.  WSFA 12
