ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Today, Montgomery firefighters fought a fire at a single-story home in the 100 block of Beckview Drive just after 2 o'clock, and the residents got out safely — an investigation will determine how it started. WAKA 8
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Southern Union State Community College Kitchen served a ribeye sandwich special Friday (part of its ongoing 'Fridays in the Kitchen' series) to introduce a new menu option to its patrons. WSFA 12
- ➤ Alabama public school students have improved in reading, graduation and college readiness as new data from the Department of Education shows that 88.4% of third graders met the reading test benchmark and the class of 2024 reached a 91% graduation rate with 87% earning at least one college and career readiness indicator — board members are now working with state staff to help schools in districts with lower performance. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Montgomery’s ALEA announced changes for CDL holders that will take effect statewide — starting June 23, DOT medical certifications must be submitted electronically and the CDL skills test will update on July 1 — with the revised test removing redundant steps in vehicle inspection and adding new maneuvers to improve road safety. - ➤ State Sen. Jack Williams (R-Wilmer) announced his 2026 bid for agriculture commissioner this week, saying he is worried about Alabama’s aging farmer population and foreign competition that hurt local farms; he is a fourth-generation farmer from Mobile. He will face other candidates in the GOP primary (May 19). Alabama Daily News
- ➤ Montgomery named Lucinda Babers chief operating officer and she took the role on June 6. Babers (a Carver High School graduate, military veteran, and former Deputy Mayor for Operations and Infrastructure in Washington, D.C.) brings strong local experience to improve city services. WSFA 12
- ➤ Alabama lawmakers have praised a report that the FBI plans to move its National Academy from Quantico to Huntsville, which could bring more law enforcement members to local training centers. FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino is leading the move — officials said more personnel will join Redstone Arsenal if funding is secured. Alabama Daily News

- ➤ Legacy Golf Championship returns for its 2nd annual showcase of youth golf talent in Montgomery where organizers offer a platform for young golfers to learn from renowned coach Jason Goldsmith (who shared the same techniques with top players). After launching with a Friday night Pairings Party, the event continues today with a Junior-Am tournament and will expand into family-friendly activities tomorrow and competitive rounds early next week.
