CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A 28-year-old Montgomery woman, Carmilla Taylor, died from gunshot wounds sustained in a Sunday morning double shooting on the 2800 block of E. South Blvd — police are investigating her death. WSFA 12

- ➤ Grammy Award-winning R&B singer Anthony Hamilton will perform live on Saturday, Oct. 11 at Garrett Coliseum Fairgrounds in Montgomery during the Alabama National Fair—his free concert starts at 7 p.m. and will deliver his soulful tunes under the stars. WSFA 12
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Alabama school districts reported varied third grade reading test results under the Literacy Act, which now requires students to meet a higher benchmark to move to fourth grade — many districts recorded gains while Montgomery County, Bessemer City, and Sumter County saw drops. The state recalculated last year’s scores using the new standard to show mixed progress, with strong improvements in some Black Belt districts and charter schools. Alabama Daily News

- ➤ Alabama joined a $7.4 billion nationwide opioid settlement with Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family after Attorney General Steve Marshall confirmed the plan on Monday — local governments will receive up to $75 million over the next three years to support opioid treatment, prevention and recovery. - ➤ Edward Poolos, deputy commissioner of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, was named the new director of the Alabama Department of Environmental Management after the commission chose him Friday to replace retired Lance LeFleur. He brings 25 years of ADEM experience — including 17 years managing its Decatur field office — and a strong focus on protecting Alabama’s environment. Alabama Daily News
