- ➤ Former NFL player Frank Walker hosted his annual youth football camp at Tuskegee University on Tuesday, where 100 kids from Booker T. Washington, Notasulga and Tallassee High Schools played and learned football while reconnecting with longtime mentors (head coach Aaron James and AD Reginald Ruffin) as he shared lessons from his career and community contributions (backed by family support). - ➤ The Central Alabama Aging Consortium held its annual world elder abuse awareness day ceremony to honor victims facing financial, verbal and physical abuse. The organization will host an Elderly Justice and Fraud Conference in Wetumpka on July 17 + aiming to boost support and awareness for seniors. WAKA 8

- ➤ On Monday, deputies responded to the 1200 block of West South Boulevard where they recovered an injured woman taken to a local hospital and arrested 26-year-old Amajay Nelson-Cox, who is charged with assault 1st degree & kidnapping 1st degree. WAKA 8
- ➤ On Wednesday, an adult man was critically injured in a shooting on the 600 block of Keystone Street — officers responded around 8:55 a.m. and took him to a local hospital as they investigated for suspects. WAKA 8

- ➤ Montgomery Ballet secures a permanent home in Montgomery (to boost financial support for students and classes) and will open the new facility (in September). WSFA 12
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Alabama senators Katie Britt and Tommy Tuberville helped update a tax cut bill that raises child care tax credits and changes SNAP costs, but the bill must still win more votes before it becomes law. The Senate plan ups credits for families and lowers the state SNAP share — a change aimed at easing costs for workers and farmers. Alabama Daily News
- ➤ The new Alabama vape law HB8 took effect on June 1 and raises fines—up to five times higher for repeat violations—and adds fees to tobacco permits while funding youth education and enforcement programs. The law also bans vending machine sales of vape products and requires schools to adopt new prevention policies by Sept. 1. AL.com

- ➤ On Tuesday, officials from the Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission confirmed that they moved forward with issuing contested dispensary licenses after years of litigation, though patients must wait several months before accessing products. Commission counsel said investigative hearings are set to begin soon — a key step toward opening dispensaries — and he expressed guarded optimism about expanding access as approvals progress.
