COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ On June 18, 2025, Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama team members donated $14,209 of personal funds to the Heart of Alabama Food Bank during their annual food drive — and the company added $10,000 to reach a total of $24,209 — which will provide over 121,000 meals to those in need. - ➤ Buckmasters Expo 2025 will take place at the Montgomery Convention Center from August 15th to 17th, featuring over 300 booths, gear demos, outdoor celebrity appearances and a bull riding show (Friday 8-10 p.m. and Saturday 7-9 p.m.). Admission will be by a $1 donation or a canned food item to benefit local charities. WSFA 12
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Alabama State University announced that it will build two new student apartment buildings on Forest Avenue and South University Drive to house over 550 students. *Dr. Quinton Ross* said the plan was discussed for years and the buildings will be completed by *spring of 2027*. WAKA 8
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The City of Montgomery will host the Hope and Opportunity Day Block Party on Saturday, June 28 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at 164 E. South Boulevard—officials say the event will offer resources to help reduce violence and empower local youth. WAKA 8
- ➤ The Alabama Department of Corrections graduated 92 new corrections officers yesterday at Church of the Highlands in Montgomery after a 10‑week training course. The officers received their certificates and learned their future assignments — steps that help keep our community secure. WAKA 8
- ➤ Alabama has made Juneteenth an official state holiday, marking 160 years since enslaved people in Galveston learned they were free after the Civil War — a decision that builds on its federal holiday status from 2021. WAKA 8
- ➤ Today, the Alabama Department of Corrections said it will miss the July federal court deadline to hire an extra 2,000 officers—staffing remains below the court's order despite improved recruitment. Commissioner John Hamm added that higher salaries and a new partnership with the Alabama Community College System have raised trainee pass rates, even as the agency seeks to meet growing staffing needs.
