COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Montgomery Humane Society released its June numbers today showing it took in 722 animals and performed nearly 1,000 spays and neuters — which helped prevent about 10,000 euthanasias — while the facility now houses almost 400 pets. The group warned that rescue operations alone cannot meet the community's needs.  WSFA 12

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A single-vehicle crash on I-85 south near the 15 mile marker at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday killed a 20-year-old and injured four people—one was airlifted to UAB while three others went by ambulance to a local hospital as investigators looked into the crash.  WAKA 8

CRIME NEWS

  • Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey scheduled a September 25 nitrogen gas execution for 49-year-old Geoffrey Todd West, convicted of killing convenience store clerk Margaret Parrish Berry during a 1997 robbery at Harold’s Chevron in Attalla—West had chosen nitrogen gas before the state finalized its procedures.  Alabama Daily News

  • State leaders expressed sorrow after 8-year-old Sarah Marsh of Mountain Brook died when heavy flooding hit Camp Mystic in Hunt, Texas on July 4—her death adds to a tragic toll of 82 victims. Gov. Kay Ivey and U.S. Sen. Katie Britt offered condolences as rescuers continued searching for missing campers in Texas.  WAKA 8
