COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Montgomery Whitewater marked its second anniversary on July 7 near the banks of the Alabama River after opening in 2023 as one of only three facilities in the nation for whitewater activities. The county commission will consider a $1M funding package tomorrow from ARPA funds to support future development—such as concerts, competitions, and retail expansion.  WAKA 8

CRIME NEWS

  • Police and fire medics were dispatched at 6:21 p.m. Friday, July 4, to a report of a shooting in Montgomery and arrived to find 20-year-old La’Byrion Caffey dead on the scene—his death is being investigated as a homicide.  AL.com
  • Zedekiah Sykes, 58, pleaded guilty to a federal charge for a robbery at a Montgomery dry cleaning business on March 10 when he and three accomplices forced entry and used a BB gun—mistaken for a real handgun—to demand $8,000 before fleeing, and a sentencing hearing will be scheduled soon.  1819 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed reported that crime dropped in the first half of 2025 with violent crime down 28.3%, nonviolent crime down 13.3%, homicides down 13.5% and nonfatal shootings down 22.5%. He also detailed city improvements such as pothole repairs, road resurfacing and reopening community centers (a result of smart police deployment and advanced technology) (as the administration works to build on these public safety gains).  WAKA 8
  • Jackson County Sheriff’s Office Chief Corrections Deputy Hal Nash was named chair of the Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles effective immediately — he was chosen from a list of five qualified candidates — Gov. Ivey said on Monday.  WSFA 12
  • Gov. Ivey announced today that Hal Nash, a former law enforcement leader in Jackson and DeKalb counties, is the new chair of the Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles — replacing Leigh Gwathney. Nash served as chief corrections deputy at the Jackson County Sheriff's Office — and he brings his experience to guide the board’s public safety role.  Alabama Daily News
  • Mayor Reed said the city is making progress cleaning roadways — an effort that aims to improve safety and keep Montgomery neighborhoods clean.  WSFA 12

  • Mental health experts say parents may face tough talks at home as news of Texas floods that killed 82 people—including children at summer camps—stirs worry. They advise letting children lead any conversation about what they heard and seeking help if behavior changes occur.  WSFA 12
