COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Monde Donaldson from the Better Business Bureau is giving Zoom tips to help Montgomery residents avoid scams during the tax-free weekend. Community groups also plan events including Fresh Anointing House of Worship’s youth conference (Kingdom Over Kulture) from July 24 to 27, Grammy winner Pynk Beard’s concert at Red Bluff bar on Saturday July 19, ASU’s 3rd annual Buzz Run on August 16, Wetumpka’s Farmers Market every Thursday until August 14, and Cloverdale Playhouse’s live production of The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane from today until July 27.  WSFA 12

  • Billy Whigham was promoted on July 16 to Montgomery County President at River Bank & Trust, where he will lead the bank’s lending and retail teams. He has nearly 20 years of banking experience and a strong record of community service (volunteering with local schools and civic groups) that will guide him in his new role.  Montgomery Chamber

CRIME NEWS

  • Governor Ivey said ALEA has made the officer-involved shooting of Jabari Peoples in Homewood a top priority after his family requested to view police video footage from June 23—when Peoples was fatally shot following a physical altercation with an officer—and stated that once the investigation is complete the video will be turned over to the local district attorney for review.  WSFA 12
  • Montgomery Police are searching for a suspect who robbed the American Pride gas station in the 5600 block of Atlanta Highway Wednesday afternoon near noon — officers urge anyone with information to call 334-625-2532.  WSFA 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Montgomery City Council approved a downtown curfew for those under 17 to help reduce violence in the area. Pending the mayor’s signature, the rule will apply to downtown and run from 9 p.m. — 6 a.m. on weekdays and from 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights, with a $500 fine for the first two offenses and possible jail time for later violations.  1819 News
  • The Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries is accepting applications until Friday, Aug. 29 for its Century and Heritage Farm and Bicentennial Farm programs—designed to honor family farms that have been owned by the same family for 100 or 200 years. Farms must meet criteria such as owning at least 40 acres and providing historical evidence, and accepted applications may have records preserved in state archives.  WSFA 12
