  • ABC 33/40 chief meteorologist James Spann will launch his own channel, Alabama Weather Network, on August 11, which will air recorded programs on storm preparation and update forecasts every 20 minutes — he will also use a state-wide network of cameras and volunteer spotters during live weather events.  AL.com

CRIME NEWS

  • A Dothan man, 33-year-old Eric Major, died when police responded at around 5:45 a.m. on Wednesday to a shooting on the 2300 block of E. Sixth Street near Carter Hill Road; police said another victim was treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound—no suspect or motive has been named—as the investigation continues.  WSFA 12
  • Montgomery police said a shooting in the Forest Park area on Wednesday around 5:45 a.m. left 32-year-old Eric Major dead and another man with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound injured on the 2300 block of E. Sixth Street, and they are asking anyone with information to come forward.  WAKA 8

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Montgomery Zoo announced the hatching of four Caribbean flamingo chicks, the first in over 20 years, after animal care staff spent months transforming the aviary to create a suitable mud wallow — a clear sign of their commitment to proper flamingo nesting. The chicks, named Kisba, Uyuni, Puddles and Pippi, hatched from June 4 through July 7 — and visitors can now see three of the chicks while Uyuni recovers at the veterinary clinic.  Montgomery Chamber
  • Tonight, the curtain will rise on the Millbrook Community Players' production of Peter Pan and Wendy — a musical directed by Michael Proper and Corrie Simpler that features 36 cast members in a panto-style adaptation of J.M. Barrie's classic story. The interactive show also collects donations to help community members Libby Barrett, who has Aplastic Anemia, and baby Evie Williams, who is receiving treatment for infant leukemia.  Elmore Autauga News
