  • Local families can save money on school supplies during the Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday, and Lucille Wyatt celebrated her 100th birthday Saturday while Prattville held its 37th annual CityFest with community events—authorities arrested two men for possession after an arranged cocaine sale and Alabama Public Television responded to spending cuts following a House vote—plus the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts named a new temporary director July 18. CRIME NEWS

  • Montgomery police are investigating a possible shooting at America's Pride Gas Station on Atlanta Highway—officers secured the scene and collected evidence while witnesses described the incident.  WSFA 12
  • Four people were arrested after a vehicle refused to stop during a traffic stop on Saturday in the 500 block of Eastern Boulevard, triggering a police chase that ended in a brief foot pursuit near Wares Ferry Road and Burbank Drive—police reported no further details.  WAKA 8
  • Montgomery Police arrested 22-year-old Dontrez Taylor on July 18 and charged him with Capital Murder and Murder for the July 12 homicides of 27-year-old Malik Benson and 26-year-old Dekeith Whatley—investigations continue.  WAKA 8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Montgomery’s Emergency Call Center built its team with new hires from training classes in January, April and July to handle 24/7 emergency calls — including two dispatchers and seven operators who began training on July 18 — and each new worker must complete a four to eight week class before taking calls.  WSFA 12
  • On June 18th, Montgomery Police Department celebrated the graduation of the 2025 Junior Police Academy class—this weeklong program introduced local youth to police work.  The Montgomery Independent
  • Alabama Public Television has responded to spending cuts after the House passed a package on Friday morning that will pull back about $9 billion in federal funds—further details on the network's next steps have not been released.  WSFA 12

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dozens of expectant mothers gathered at Bellingrath Middle School on July 19—organized by the Bold Goals Campaign—to receive free supplies and meet pediatricians and child health experts. They gained resources on maternal health, early childhood development and family support services.  AL.com
