COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Alabama food banks are worried that new SNAP work requirements from a large megabill will force more families to rely on them for help, deepening food insecurity for one in seven residents. The changes—expected to affect about 61,000 residents and stress services across 12 counties—may leave seniors and other vulnerable neighbors with less food assistance.  Alabama Daily News
  • On August 2nd, Fresh Anointing House of Worship church will host a back to school bash with giveaways plus fun for the kids.  WSFA 12
  • The Montgomery Humane Society introduced Pets of the Week featuring kitten Lizzy—an almost 3-month-old cat that loves kisses—and dog Alex, a 4-year-old mix known for his calm nature, and both are available for adoption at the society’s front desk or website.  WAKA 8

CRIME NEWS

  • A man was charged after a Friday night shooting on Atlanta Highway that involved multiple people — deputies took him into custody, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said.  WSFA 12
  • A pedestrian was struck and killed by a car on Friday, July 25, at about 8:14 p.m. near Eastern Boulevard and Interstate 85; police said the victim was 35-year-old Eric Marco Jones and no other injuries were reported while the investigation is ongoing.  WAKA 8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A federal district court ruled this week that the Montgomery Job Corps Center must stay open for now — officials said the ruling lets the center keep serving youth while plans for future steps are made.  WSFA 12
  • Chief District Attorney Michele Davidson said that one in five children report being bullied and her office is working to eliminate bullying ahead of the new school term. She expects legal and school officials to join forces—aiming to reduce bullying incidents to zero.  WSFA 12
