- ➤ James Sikes will sell the longtime Montgomery store Sikes and Kohn’s — a well-known local retail landmark — to local owner Neal Smith, who plans to expand the store’s inventory and add more western wear. Sikes, who started the business in the 1970s, will step aside in December and help guide the transition. WSFA 12
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Montgomery police arrested 32-year-old Anthony Williams, Jr. after a traffic stop on the 500 block of West Fairview Avenue at about 12:15 p.m. (CDT) turned into a car chase and foot pursuit (suspected stolen vehicle) yesterday which ended with him being charged with first degree receiving stolen property and held at Montgomery County Jail. - ➤ After a gunfight at a Chevron station on the 6800 block of Atlanta Highway Friday night, Montgomery deputies arrested 19-year-old Pedro Bennett, Jr and 19-year-old King Walker—both face charges of attempted murder and discharging a firearm and are held on a $90,000 bond. WAKA 8
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Lawmakers will meet in late August to discuss linking state money for public universities to gains in graduation rates and keeping students in school. Sen. Orr said the new plan builds on the K-12 change and may give schools a bonus by fiscal 2027 — if they meet set goals. Alabama Daily News
- ➤ Montgomery Public Schools will host a Back to School Bash on August 2nd to help students get ready for school — the event will include fun activities for the students. WSFA 12

- ➤ The Prattville Swim League ended its summer season with a 5th place finish among 23 teams at the state championships in Albertville, where several swimmers earned medals including three state champions and one relay top finish. PSL will send two swimmers to the YMCA National Championships in Ocala and begin its fall season at the Prattville YMCA on August 11th—new swimmer evaluations will be held on August 12th, 14th, 19th and 21st.
