  • On Tuesday afternoon, Montgomery Police responded to a call near the 9100 block of Eastchase Parkway +found an unresponsive man who was pronounced dead+ and are now investigating the incident.  WSFA 12

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Alabama Power explains that using less air conditioning lowers energy bills because it uses most of a home’s electricity, and the company advises customers to close blinds—especially when away—and unplug appliances not in use to keep homes cooler. This guidance comes as part of ongoing efforts to help consumers save money on their energy bills.  WSFA 12

  • Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama donated $25,000 in sponsorships to Montgomery Public Schools yesterday to help fund its upcoming Back to School Bash. The event will take place on Saturday, August 2 at the Multiplex at Cramton Bowl and will provide free school supplies, food & activities for students.  WAKA 8
  • Alabama students going back to school face a new rule that requires phones, earbuds and smartwatches to be turned off and stored away during the school day as set by the FOCUS Act. High schoolers from the Class of 2026 must earn a college or career readiness credential and choose between a standard track or a new career-focused diploma track—which could affect college admissions.  Alabama Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Federal judges questioned lawyers on Tuesday over a request by Black voters and civil rights groups to require Alabama to seek federal review for new congressional maps drawn in the next seven years; state officials including the attorney general and the Justice Department oppose the measure. The judges noted that the state’s past defiance of court orders when redistricting raises concerns it could repeat those actions—prompting scrutiny of future plans.  Alabama Daily News
