COMMUNITY NEWS

  • River Region Runners donated a large amount to Alabama Sheriffs Youth Ranches to support local youth programs—an action that shows the commitment of local fitness enthusiasts to community well-being.  WSFA 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • New for 2025, the CHOOSE Act gives families income tax credits to help pay for private school education—an option that will expand school choice for the upcoming year.  WSFA 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Montgomery Forward is a $50+ million initiative by Mayor Steven Reed and the City Council that renews neighborhoods and builds facilities in underserved areas; as of May, more than $53 million in projects have been completed and $10 million is underway to add community centers, fire stations and parks. The nearly complete Courtney Harman Pruitt Community Center will open later this year — a key step in the city’s long-term commitment to improving quality of life.  WSFA 12
  • City Councilman Oronde Mitchell and Attorney Sage Grubbs will host a renter's rights meeting on August 2 to give local tenants clear legal guidance. The meeting will offer updated rental laws+ and a forum for tenant questions+ to help residents understand their rights.  WSFA 12
  • Rep. Shomari Figures spoke on Wednesday at the Montgomery Chamber event to explain what is happening in Washington—news that matters to local residents—and urged them to stay informed. His remarks provided a clear update on national issues affecting the community.  WSFA 12

HEALTH NEWS

  • UAB reached an agreement with UnitedHealthcare on Thursday to keep insurance coverage in place for thousands of residents. The deal covers several facilities including Baptist Hospitals in Montgomery and Prattville as well as UAB Saint Vincent’s and Callahan Eye Hospital in Birmingham—ensuring patients keep their in-network access.  WSFA 12
