- ➤ Mayor Gordon Smith of Pike Road said the town will host a Back to School Bash on August 9 — he discussed the event during his appearance on WSFA. WSFA 12
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ The 32 year old Shanarion Lee was sentenced yesterday to 46 months in federal prison for his role in a fentanyl conspiracy that shipped counterfeit pills to addresses in Alabama, and he must serve five years of supervised release after his prison term. WAKA 8
- ➤ A Montgomery man, Calvin Craig Griffin, 22, pleaded guilty in April and was sentenced on Thursday to 81 months in federal prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm+ he was arrested after entering a hotel room on Eastern Boulevard with an AR style pistol loaded with 63 rounds and will serve three years of supervised release. - ➤ The ASF Foundation is accepting applications for its 2025—2026 Student Ambassadors Program that lets high school students earn scholarships and build leadership skills. Registration opened on August 1 and will close on August 31. Elmore Autauga News
- ➤ A new online tool called Alabama Direct Admission Initiative was unveiled in Montgomery to match high school seniors with 16 four-year and 23 two-year colleges and offer early admission without a traditional application process. Seniors can create their profile on (Aug. 26) and must finish it by (Sept. 23) with colleges sending offers starting Oct. 6. Alabama Daily News
- ➤ Governor Ivey proclaimed August as School Bus Driver Appreciation Month to honor the more than 10,000 drivers who safely transport over 350,000 students, and she noted that these drivers face challenges on rural roads and busy highways while saving more than 48,000,000 gallons of fuel compared to using individual vehicles+ she urged residents to thank their bus drivers as school starts next week.
