- ➤ The Alabama Legislature passed bills that will lower the state sales tax on food from 3% to 2% and remove the tax on baby products starting Sept. 1, saving consumers an estimated $122 million and $13 million a year. Other laws passed this year will take effect later and will toughen penalties for shooting into occupied spaces, allow distilleries to offer guided tours, and change rules for prenatal care and smartphone content filters.
