COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Unity Worship Center partnered with Kulture City to renovate its building so that it becomes sensory accessible. The upgrades were completed earlier this week to better serve the congregation and visitors.  WSFA 12

CRIME NEWS

  • Montgomery police said a man was shot and killed at 7:17 a.m. Monday on the 900 block of Charles Street near Ann Street—32-year-old Kentaris Couch died on scene and no suspects have been named.  WAKA 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • August is National Get Ready for Kindergarten Month that reminds Montgomery parents to help their kids prepare for school by engaging them in social settings and practicing basic skills. Montgomery Christian School will welcome students to its new campus in the former Aldersgate Church building on Vaughn Road on Aug. 11.  WSFA 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayor Steven Reed said Montgomery's violent and nonviolent crimes remain lower than last year, but he is calling for bail and bond reform to stop repeat offenders. He noted that tougher actions on traffic violations have also helped reduce automobile accidents compared to last year.  WSFA 12
  • The Alabama Cooperative Extension System launched a statewide survey to ask residents what programs they want for agriculture, youth development, natural resources, community health — and economic growth. Officials created the survey after listening to extension agents in all 67 counties and will use the results to shape future programs.  Alabama Daily News
  • The U.S. Department of Labor froze funding for Easterseals Central Alabama’s SCSEP program on July 1, halting job training and part-time work for low-income seniors across 16 counties. Officials said 364 seniors were enrolled before the furlough and that congressional inquiries have been made—no update from the Labor Department has been received—leaving the program’s future uncertain.  WAKA 8
