CRIME NEWS

  • Montgomery Police arrested 20 year old Najari Mitchell on seven counts of first degree robbery and 23 year old Rayshon Hall on three counts in connection with multiple robberies and placed them in the Montgomery County Detention Center with no bond—and the investigation is ongoing.  WAKA 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Montgomery Public Schools will continue to offer free and reduced-price meals for the 2025-26 school year under the federal Community Eligibility Provision — letting all students get breakfast and lunch without applications. The program follows USDA guidelines and helps students be ready to learn.  WSFA 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Two GOP candidates for attorney general—Jay Mitchell and Katherine Robertson—raised over $1.7 million and $1.5 million respectively and are debating the use of dark money versus local funds as they prepare for the May 19 primary. Mitchell, who resigned from the state Supreme Court to run, said his donations came mainly from in-state groups while Robertson highlighted over $1 million from a Nashville nonprofit.  Alabama Daily News
  • Yesterday, the nation marked 60 years since President Lyndon Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act after the Selma marches, as civil rights veterans recalled the hardships of Bloody Sunday—warning that current changes to voting rules threaten hard-won rights.  WSFA 12

HEALTH NEWS

  • New CDC data for the 2024-2025 school year shows more than 95% of Alabama kindergartners were fully vaccinated, compared to about 92% nationwide. Dr. Wes Stubblefield said vaccines — including Tdap, polio, measles and chickenpox — have long been proven safe, and the Jefferson County Department of Health is hosting a Back-to-School Immunization Clinic through August 13 to help kids get caught up.  WSFA 12
