COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Montgomery community leaders and residents met Thursday at a forum hosted by the Montgomery Metropolitan Planning Organization to offer ideas for updating the 2019 Walk Bike plan by improving sidewalks, bike lanes, and trails — strategists from Kimley-Horn helped guide the discussion.  WSFA 12
  • Local groups are hosting a series of events this weekend from August 8th to 10th—featuring back-to-school celebrations, Bayou Bash, and other community gatherings updated in recent schedules.  WSFA 12

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A national jewelry and accessory chain filed for bankruptcy protection for the second time on August 7th due to rising debt and online competition that reduced its store count from over 4,500 to about 2,700 (it first filed in 2018). In Montgomery, the chain operates stores at EastChase, Eastdale Mall, and inside the Ann Street Walmart (a familiar spot for ear piercing services).  WAKA 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students returned to Troy Elementary School today to begin the new 2025-2026 school year. The school chose the theme 'the best is yet to come' to guide its efforts and motivate students.  WSFA 12
  • Valiant Cross Academy in Montgomery welcomed students back to the classroom on Wednesday. The school held an opening ceremony—marking the start of the new school year.  WSFA 12
  • Montgomery Public Schools said all students will get free breakfast and lunch for the 2025-26 school year under the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs — parents do not need to apply because the district uses the Community Eligibility Provision.  WAKA 8

  • City Councilman Ordone Mitchelle and County Commissioner Carmen Moore-Zeigler are hosting an air conditioner giveaway for seniors 70+ today—offering free units to help local seniors stay cool as temperatures rise.  WSFA 12
