CULTURE NEWS

  • The Montgomery Davis Theatre will stage 'Black Angels Over Tuskegee' on August 30th—presenting the story of a Tuskegee Airman and highlighting his legacy on stage.  WSFA 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A Montgomery public school received national recognition when its Loveless Academic Magnet Program High School earned the top spot among 297 Alabama high schools — it also ranked 30th in the nation according to U.S. News and World Report.  WSFA 12
  • Starting in August, the Alabama Department of Human Resources and the Alabama Department of Early Childhood Education will enroll foster children ages 0-5 in the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program to receive free books each month. The new effort builds on Governor Kay Ivey’s 2023 push for statewide enrollment to help young children develop early reading skills.  Elmore Autauga News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Thousands of airmen and cyber experts will gather in Montgomery for the Air Force Cyber Conference, which runs from August 25th to August 27th—organizers expect the event to boost national cyber security efforts.  WSFA 12
  • The Montgomery Humane Society launched a campaign for shelter repairs after sharing photos that showed damage to its building — Rep. Shomari Figures held a town hall meeting Tuesday night in Montgomery to discuss issues in Washington. Voters in over 140 municipalities will head to the polls next week, and Mayor Steven Reed presented his record $353.2 million budget proposal to city council on Tuesday.  WSFA 12
  • Mayor Steven Reed presented his fiscal 2026 budget proposal of $353.2 million to city council on August 20th, making it the largest city budget ever and promising investments such as Amazon’s $100 million facility to create 500 jobs — Diageo nears completion of its $415 million beverage project while the fiscal year starts on October 1.  WAKA 8
  • Montgomery Fire and Rescue union has asked the City Council for a 10% wage increase to address staffing shortages and low pay—city leaders argue that the firefighters already earn competitive wages and note a 60% budget boost over five years. A petition with over 1,000 signatures backs the union request while officials maintain that comparisons to larger cities do not reflect local cost differences.  WSFA 12

SPORTS NEWS

  • Montgomery is preparing for the ESPN FCS Kickoff Game on August 23 at 6:00 p.m. at historic Cramton Bowl where Mercer University and UC Davis will compete on ESPN as city officials plan road closures and parking details for hundreds of fans.  WAKA 8
  • Alabama is trying to reclaim its status as a top college football team in coach Kalen DeBoer's second season after a setback with a nine to four record and losses to unranked teams last season. The Crimson Tide will open play on the road against Florida State on Aug. 30 and face a tough five-week schedule — including home games and matchups against top ranked opponents — as they aim to build on their lessons.  Alabama Daily News
