COMMUNITY NEWS

  • AAA Alabama will give away free steering wheel locks to Hyundai and Kia owners with model years 2011 to 2022 to help deter theft. The event will be held on Tuesday, August 26 (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) at AAA offices in Montgomery, Birmingham, and Huntsville and requires proof of vehicle ownership.  WAKA 8
  • Yesterday, the City of Montgomery installed new playground equipment in the Cloverdale-Idlewild neighborhood as Mayor Steven Reed and Council member Andrew Szymanski cut the ribbon while excited children watched — the facility features monkey bars, slides, and firepoles with nearly $1 million invested.  WAKA 8

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Montgomery will honor top local entrepreneurs today at the 2025 MGM Small Business Awards as finalists chosen by a national panel for innovation and growth gather for a free ceremony scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.—the event will be followed by a ticketed social at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts’ Sculpture Garden.  WSFA 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Foster children in Alabama now have access to quality age-appropriate books every month through the Dolly Parton Imagination Library—this program will offer new reading resources for foster care programs.  WSFA 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today the Legislative Sunset Committee required that state licensing board representatives be sworn in to tell the truth as they answer questions on spending, revenue, and fees. Lawmakers will ask why some boards should not be merged with other state agencies as they begin a review for reauthorization in 2026 (including agencies like the Alabama Construction Recruitment Institute).  Alabama Daily News
  • Council member Andrew Szymanski said that Airbnb rentals hosting late night parties caused a shooting in Midtown and the commerce committee will meet soon to consider changes such as tighter background checks and annual inspections—residents in Cottage Hill support better control—aiming to lower neighborhood disturbances.  WAKA 8
