COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Montgomery doubled its playground investments to bring modern play structures to neighborhoods after a ribbon-cutting at Cloverdale Park, having finished installations at Cloverdale and Southlawn Parks. City officials announced over $930,000 in funds from various sources will support 12 new installations in the coming months + further projects planned as council directs additional investments.  WSFA 12
  • On August 24, 2025, Child Protect held its first Tennis Court Classic at Wynlakes Country Club in East Montgomery—32 players competed to raise funds for forensic interviews, trauma-informed counseling, and family advocacy services for children in need.  WAKA 8

BUSINESS NEWS

  • More than 300 businesses gathered at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts Friday for the first-ever MGM Small Business Awards as the city celebrated local entrepreneurs and supported growth—city officials recognized winners in 11 categories and awarded six grants totaling $90,000 for storefront improvements.  WSFA 12

CRIME NEWS

  • A man died after a shooting occurred early Saturday morning in Montgomery — the Montgomery Police Department confirmed the incident.  WSFA 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Last year, about 4,700 third graders were at risk of being held back under Alabama’s 2019 literacy law after missing the spring reading test—a decrease from the 6,500 who missed it previously, with 2,400 students not retaking the exam. State Superintendent Eric Mackey said the final retention numbers will be known in October, and schools plan to add support for fourth graders to catch up.  Alabama Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A federal judge ruled Friday that Alabama’s Senate district map diluted Black voter influence near the capital and violated the Voting Rights Act. Judge Anna Manasco blocked the current map for the 2026 elections—ordering a new one to create a Montgomery district where Black voters are close to a majority.  Alabama Daily News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today, the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners removed language on medical license applications that forced doctors to list past mental health issues—this change earned the board recognition as a 2025 Wellbeing First Champion and allows health care workers to seek help without fear of career impact.  WSFA 12

SPORTS NEWS

  • Today, Montgomery’s Cramton Bowl hosted the FCS Kickoff Classic as the UC Davis Aggies played the Mercer Bears and fans traveled from near and far to watch the game—some coming over 2,000 miles to see college football return. This event united local supporters with visitors who came to cheer on the teams.  WSFA 12
