COMMUNITY NEWS

  • WSFA reports a large police presence in mid-town Montgomery as Millbrook Police Department prepares to host its 15th annual Cops 'N Kids Day on August 30th—Chief P.K. Johnson explained that the event will offer fun activities for children.  WSFA 12
  • Uncle B’s Sauces and Rubs will host a hot dog eating contest on September 1st—part of their Labor Day All American Bash that offers a chance to win $500.  WSFA 12

CRIME NEWS

  • Officers responded to an August 13 homicide on Virginia Loop Road where they found 30-year-old Marcus Bellinger fatally shot and arrested 32-year-old Kardeem Poole—he is charged with murder and held in Montgomery County Detention Facility.  WAKA 8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayor Steven Reed condemned Sen. Tommy Tuberville’s threat to deploy National Guard troops in Montgomery and Birmingham, saying crime has fallen and the city now needs investments in jobs, education, mental health, and public safety—stressing that Montgomery is not a battlefield.  AL.com
  • Residents of Pike Road turned out in record numbers to reelect Mayor Gordon Stone on Tuesday, with unofficial counts showing him ahead by 54 votes—1,566 to 1,512. Provisional ballots will be counted and the election canvassed on Tuesday, Sept 2 at noon.  WSFA 12

HEALTH NEWS

  • A child in north Alabama was diagnosed with measles—the first case reported since 2002—after contracting the virus while traveling outside the United States, ADPH said on Monday, and the unvaccinated child under 5 did not attend school or daycare, prompting officials to urge vaccination to prevent further spread.  Alabama Daily News
