🎓 Education
Today, Tuskegee University begins its first Red Tails Classic Weekend in Montgomery to honor the Tuskegee Airmen — featuring a Friday scholarship golf tournament at Lagoon Park, a Saturday STEM day on Riverfront with a gala, and a Sunday football game at Cramton Bowl.
Hyundai Power Transformers donated 30 iPads, 500 notebook computers and a $5,000 check to Montgomery Preparatory Academy for Career Technologies yesterday after company leaders toured the school in the former Montgomery Mall, supporting technical training for 550 students.
The donation aims to boost career skills for high-demand fields.
Huntingdon College announced on Aug.
27 that Fall semester enrollment surpassed 1,000 students, setting a new record for the college.
Prattville High School’s marching band completed 75 hours of summer practice and performed at an event on Aug.
14 after being selected for America’s 250th birthday parade. It will perform its halftime show at a home game on Sept. 4 — a nod to its dedication to music education.
🏛️ Government
Alabama is exploring a special Dolly Parton car tag honoring her work with the Imagination Library; the tag will be made if 1,000 drivers sign up by May 1 next year and about 400 have pledged.
The $50 fee funds free books in counties (the tribute follows her Tuesday death).
🏥 Health
Medical cannabis dispensary Callie’s Apothecary will open today in Talladega, operated by CCS of Alabama LLC.
A third location is set for Bessemer in September, and further openings are planned in Athens, Birmingham, Oxford, Mobile, and Daphne as the program expands.
🏈 Sports
Thompson High quarterback Trent Seaborn has become one of the area’s top passers with 10,488 yards + 107 touchdowns and three state titles.
The documentary by Clay Yeager traces his journey from local flag football to committing to the University of Alabama.
The AL.com high school volleyball rankings were updated after a busy week of play that included the Juanita Boddie Tournament at the Finley Center in Hoover (Aug.
21-22) with new teams making the list and AISA Lowndes Academy rising to the top over Macon East.
