COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ On September 9, the Montgomery Kiwanis Club announced plans for the 71st Annual Alabama National Fair, which will run October 3—13 at the Garrett Coliseum fairgrounds and serve as the club's largest fundraiser for local projects. The fair will offer events such as Taste of the Fair on October 2 with $30 admission, free fair tickets for third-graders with perfect attendance, Breast Cancer Awareness Night on October 7, and Dollar Day on October 9 with local concerts and sports broadcasts. - ➤ Today, the City of Montgomery — with Community Action Agency of North Alabama and Alabama Affordable Housing Association — hosts a ribbon cutting and grand opening for Freedom Village, a 56-unit senior housing complex with green spaces, a fitness center, and a computer lab at 1740 Edgar D. Nixon Avenue. The event is part of Mayor Reed’s Re-Imagine West Montgomery Initiative to bring affordable senior housing near the new fire station and Fairview Farmers Market. Montgomery Chamber
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Last month, the Alabama State Board of Education named September Attendance Awareness Month, and education leaders at the Cognia IMPACT Conference discussed ways to reduce chronic absenteeism after COVID-19 increased virtual learning—Wayne Lyles noted his school’s attendance improved from 94% to 97% as local leaders stress the need for in-person school. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Montgomery City Council looked at a new $353.2M budget that gives raises to city workers, fixes roads like Madison Avenue and Atlanta Highway, and adds new safety measures for police and fire services in a long Tuesday hearing. Council members checked over 40 pages of funding details and will vote on the plan next Tuesday (the vote could change service funding). WAKA 8
- ➤ Montgomery City Council discussed a planned 10% raise for firefighters that would cost $4.2 million and might force cuts to the police budget—where the department has not reached its target of 400 officers. Council members debated lowering the police goal to 300 while union supporters argued that current firefighter pay does not match that in similar cities. WSFA 12
- ➤ The Montgomery County District Attorney's Office is joining the Alabama National Fair, which is right around the corner, to take part in community activities (details on their role have not yet been released). WSFA 12
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Today, the Montgomery County Health Department offers free naloxone (Narcan) kits to help reverse opioid overdoses at a kiosk on Mobile Highway—no ID or prescription is needed. The kits include two doses and easy instructions and are available during office hours Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. WAKA 8

- ➤ Professional golfers from around the world will compete in the Epson Guardian Tour Championship at the Senator Course on the Capitol Hill location in Prattville from Friday, Sept. 12 through Sunday, Sept. 14 — the tournament is sponsored by Guardian Credit Union and includes a family fun day at 10 a.m. Saturday for community members.
