  • Caleb Goodwyn has been named the new chief officer of economic development for the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce and will lead growth efforts across Montgomery and Central Alabama. He previously worked with PowerSouth Energy and for U.S. Rep. Spencer Bachus, and he takes over following Ellen McNair’s long legacy—setting a new course for regional economic planning.  WAKA 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Wednesday, Gov. Ivey and former Bama quarterback Brodie Croyle kicked off Day 2 of the annual Cognia Alabama Impact Conference at Frazer Church—where Ivey praised Alabama's historic gains in reading and math while Croyle stressed the importance of strong leadership for children. The conference offered new strategies to improve education in Alabama.  WSFA 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Montgomery and partners opened Freedom Village yesterday, a senior housing development offering 56 two-bedroom apartments with reserved units for people with disabilities and those experiencing homelessness. The project cost $18.2 million and created 216 temporary jobs along with two permanent positions—strengthening government efforts to boost local affordable housing.  WAKA 8
  • A $28 million renovation of Montgomery County jail has replaced old plumbing that once cost up to $80,000 a month, cutting water bills to a few hundred dollars—upgrading the facility with education and job training programs including culinary certification and GED study via iPads. Renovation work will continue with more upgrades expected to be finished in spring 2026.  WAKA 8
  • Montgomery's mayor responded today to a request for a firefighter raise — noting that the proposed increase is estimated to cost over $4 million. City officials will review the request for further action.  WSFA 12

HEALTH NEWS

  • Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System earned a five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services for the second year in a row, scoring high in patient safety, timely care, and other key areas — making it one of only two hospitals in the state to achieve this rating. CEO Amir Farooqi said the award reflects hard work to improve care following earlier issues with scheduling data changes.  WSFA 12
  • During Suicide Prevention Month, doctors urge families to secure firearms with steel safes and quick-access lockboxes—methods that keep guns ready for adults but out of reach for children and those in crisis. Local groups in Montgomery promote gun buy-back events and storage toolkits to help prevent impulsive suicides and save lives.  Alabama Daily News
  • Multiple organizations will host the Beat Sickle Cell 5k run on Saturday, September 13—an event to support efforts against Sickle Cell Anemia.  WSFA 12
