COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Montgomery residents have a busy weekend ahead — The Rundown shares that Brewfest, a Fall Festival, and a Catini celebration are planned from today through September 14 to bring community fun and water activities together.  WSFA 12

CRIME NEWS

  • Alabama State University canceled classes Thursday after a terroristic threat was directed at the campus—campus police and law enforcement are clearing buildings while nonresident students leave and residents shelter in place.  WSFA 12

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Montgomery Zoo will host its 2025 Zoobilation on September 18— a wild party for adults 21 and older.  WSFA 12
  • Viola Bradford appeared on WSFA to talk about a Montgomery conference on the Theology of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.—she said the event will explore his legacy in our community.  WSFA 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gov. Kay Ivey addressed education leaders at the Cognia Alabama IMPACT Conference held yesterday at Frazer Methodist Church in Montgomery—urging them to boost student achievement, innovation and school improvement for quality education.  WAKA 8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Montgomery Police Department is looking for new recruits to join the Citizens' Police Academy—classes will start on September 15th and end on November 17th.  WSFA 12
  • Gov. Ivey kicked off her back-to-school tour with a stop in Montgomery today (marking the tour’s start) (as part of her back-to-school initiative).  WSFA 12
  • The Alabama State Board of Education met in Montgomery Thursday to discuss funds they will request for the 2027 fiscal year—officials reviewed the potential budget needs for future school plans.  WSFA 12
  • The City of Montgomery today launched its 2025 Veterans Day campaign with the theme 'Montgomery Salutes: 50 Years Later, Never Forgotten' to honor Vietnam veterans on the 50th anniversary of the war's end. Events include a parade at Cramton Bowl at 10:00 a.m., a resource fair and a commemorative ceremony at Montgomery Riverwalk Stadium at 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. respectively — officials urge all veterans and their families to join in the observances.  Montgomery Chamber
  • City leaders met Thursday night to discuss ways to improve security at youth sports leagues—hoping the leagues try the new ideas and meet soon to review their progress.  WSFA 12

  • Golfers from around the world will compete this weekend at the Guardian Championship in Prattville on the LPGA Epson Tour at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail (free admission is offered and fans can enjoy Family Fun Day with free food on Sept. 13). The event gives rising players a chance to earn their tour cards as local support shapes a strong community spirit.  WSFA 12
