COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Today, Child Protect hosted its annual Shindig in Montgomery to raise funds for children who have suffered abuse and trauma, collecting about $15,000. The nonprofit, which has supported local families since 1989, provides free counseling and support to help start healing—Hunter Beck said the funds are vital. WSFA 12
- ➤ Hundreds of local community members gathered Sunday at Red Bluff Bar near the Alabama River for Child Protect’s annual 'Shindig'—an event raising funds for its Children’s Advocacy Center on South Perry Street to help victims of abuse. Child Protect will host its Swingin’ Fore Kids Golf Tournament on October 24. WAKA 8
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Valiant Cross Academy announced its elementary school will be located at the Zelia Stephens Early Childhood Center at Alabama State University—part of a new partnership offering dual enrollment opportunities, scholarships and internships. The move will create a clear path for student success and strengthen community impact in Montgomery. WAKA 8
- ➤ At its quarterly meeting on Friday, the Alabama Commission on Higher Education reported that undergraduate enrollment increased by 3.1% this fall and dual enrollment grew from 6,735 to 8,100 students. The group approved new scholarships and a sports medicine loan program as well as 15 academic programs (including Troy University's new chiropractic program set to start in fall) and announced Vice Chair Stan Nelson will preside at future meetings. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Alabama environmental officials are on alert for drought in Marengo County and nearby areas and warn that wildfires may grow as water levels drop. They said farmers and cattle owners may have to find new water sources if rain does not come soon—residents should report any uncontrolled fires. WSFA 12
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Montgomery city leaders met Monday morning to review research on short-term rentals and listen to concerns from property owners; they plan to introduce fees, inspections, and licensing rules—aiming to reach a decision within the next month. WSFA 12
- ➤ A new dashboard from the Administrative Office of Courts now shows data on civil case filings and outcomes and lets users sort information by type, county, and year—its launch is part of Chief Justice Sarah Stewart’s plan to boost court transparency; more metrics for criminal, domestic, and juvenile cases will be added later. SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ The Montgomery Biscuits clinched the Southern League south second-half title by beating the Columbus Clingstones 2-0 last Sunday—winning 17 of their last 19 games as they chase their first league championship since 2001. WSFA 12
- ➤ A new program called Hoops League at the Y is now available for 4th-6th graders as a partnership between the YMCA of Greater Montgomery and Hoops League—offering more courts for games and practices. The program divides players into competitive—recreational leagues to let more young athletes join this upcoming basketball season. WSFA 12
- ➤ The Blue Gray National Tennis Classic ended in Montgomery as top college tennis players competed in a tournament that has drawn elite athletes for more than 70 years. The event underlined our city's long sports tradition and remains a highlight of the local calendar. WSFA 12
