COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Renovations have begun at Montgomery Humane Society and with construction reducing shelter space starting Oct. 12—animals must be moved out—so the shelter needs adoption ambassadors to foster pets from Oct. 6 through Nov. 16.  WSFA 12
  • Stephanie Culpepper and Earl Baumgardner from Vivian O'Nay are hosting a 'Bbq for the Brave' fundraiser to honor volunteer firefighters after a warehouse blaze—this event will raise money to support their fire department.  WSFA 12
  • The YMCA of Greater Montgomery will host its first ever Steak-off fundraiser on September 20 — Trenae Montgomery from the YMCA discussed the event with WSFA.  WSFA 12

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Alabama business and economic leaders met in Washington on Tuesday to hear Congressman Mike Rogers stress the need for more engineers to boost the defense and aerospace sectors with plans like the Space Command headquarters and Golden Dome missile project — a move meant to support local job growth. The panel said public and private partnerships will be key to attracting talent and companies to the state.  Alabama Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Churchill Academy has moved into the former Green Gate School on McGehee Road—continuing its mission to serve students with unique learning needs in the River Region. The school now limits enrollment to 80 to maintain a low teacher-student ratio and is seeking donations for computers and help with hiring teachers.  WAKA 8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new online dashboard now gives Alabamians access to data on 36 civil case types by county and year; Chief Justice Sarah Stewart said the tool improves transparency and accountability in the court system.  WSFA 12
  • Alabama asked the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals to lift a judge's injunction that blocked part of a law limiting help with absentee ballot applications and argued the measure stops paid operatives from preying on vulnerable voters—opponents countered that it restricts assistance for those who are blind, disabled or illiterate.  WSFA 12
  • At the September 16 council meeting, councilors reviewed Mayor Steven Reed's proposed operating budget for fiscal 2026 and debated the decision not to provide a raise for firefighters—some voiced concerns before the vote. The discussion focused on the impact of the budget choice on public safety pay as the council moved toward a decision.  The Montgomery Independent
  • Today, county commissioners heard advocates push a simplified sellers use tax—designed to collect sales tax revenue more efficiently. They will review the proposal in upcoming county meetings.  WSFA 12

HEALTH NEWS

  • Congresswoman Terri Sewell and Alabamians gathered in Washington Tuesday to urge greater funding for cancer research after Sewell lost her mother to pancreatic cancer. The House advanced a bipartisan Medicare initiative on Wednesday that would let Medicare cover blood tests for up to 40 cancers — a measure addressing funding unpredictability for research.  Alabama Daily News
  • Dr. Himanshu Aggarwal and his team at Jackson Hospital performed the region's first Vacuum Aspirated Ureteroscopy Procedure — known as V-URS — to boost patient outcomes.  The Montgomery Independent
