COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Zoobilation board member Dwight Rogers explained the fundraiser will support reptiles by directing proceeds to reptile care, and the auction sells items such as gift certificates, ASF tickets, and Cloverdale theater tickets — local restaurants will offer samples, open bars and live music at the customer's expense.  WSFA 12
  • This weekend, events in the River Region include Homeschool Day at Alabama Wildlife Park, Arts, Eats and Beats downtown, a walk to fight sickle cell supporting the St. James Trojans, an Oyster Festival at Old Alabama Town with live music, and the Brewzle Whiskey Festival in Opelika—providing a mix of activities for local families.  WAKA 8

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Bed, Bath & Beyond, which once had a Montgomery store, will return to shopping centers nationwide after buying Kirkland’s for $10 million, with six Nashville locations opening first—its return in Montgomery remains unconfirmed.  WAKA 8

CULTURE NEWS

  • Main Street Montgomery today launches Art, Eats and Beats, a monthly event that turns downtown into a walkable area—featuring art shows, live music, and specials from over two dozen local businesses—and will run from 4:30 p.m. until late.  Montgomery Chamber
  • Bailey Glasgow said that at Zoobilation several local restaurants will offer free samples, open bars, and live music at the customer's expense—details that aim to bring a fun festival atmosphere to the community.  WSFA 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dozens of children aged 8 to 17 from underserved areas took part in the free four-week One Serve One Community tennis program in Montgomery — where they learned tennis basics, sportsmanship, and teamwork. Program director Katrina Wilson, honored with the Jim Wilson Award, said the course taught valuable life lessons.  WAKA 8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Eleven Alabama public charter schools asked a Montgomery circuit judge to block the state superintendent from finalizing countywide property tax distributions to other public schools until the court decides if they should be included. Judge Monet Gaines gave both sides three days to submit a proposed order, and state Superintendent Eric Mackey called the schools’ claims unfounded.  Alabama Daily News
  • Crews installed a high friction surface treatment on a stretch of Pelzer Avenue—between Wareingwood Drive and Honeysuckle Road—to improve traction and driver control on wet or curved roadways. City officials said the $155,000 pilot project was funded by state and federal dollars to target a high-crash area in Montgomery.  WSFA 12
  • The City of Montgomery will hold its monthly planning commission meeting on September 25 at 5:00 p.m. at City Hall. Public hearings will review Church of the Highlands’ plan for a Dream Center on Taylor Road, a developer's proposal for a 32-unit apartment building at the corner of Southmont Drive and East Delano Avenue, and a hospitality group's plan for a 149-room hotel in East Montgomery — none require planning commission action.  WAKA 8

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Stick a Fork In It Culinary Classes has partnered with Chef Christopher Sanders to host an adult cooking class—called We Cook and We Don't Judge—that offers hands-on food preparation skills for local residents.  WSFA 12

  • The Greater Montgomery Home Builders Association is hosting the 2025 Showcase of Homes this Saturday and Sunday — featuring over 40 homes in Central Alabama and at Lake Martin.  WSFA 12
