CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ WSFA 12 News covered the Montgomery Bus Boycott after starting broadcasts a year earlier when local residents stopped riding buses for 381 days to protest segregation, and the station captured footage shared nationwide—making Montgomery a center of civil rights history. WSFA 12
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Faulkner University awarded a full accounting degree to terminally ill student Liesl Langer, who passed away on September 7th after completing most of her coursework—her legacy spurred a new policy that lets terminally ill students graduate once they finish 75% of their work. WSFA 12
- ➤ Life Academy has closed for the rest of the week due to an outbreak of hand, foot and mouth disease and will reopen Monday, September 29 after a thorough cleaning — students will continue remote learning until then. The school is located at the City of St. Jude on West Fairview Avenue. WAKA 8
- ➤ Autauga County Schools will host a groundbreaking at Billingsley School on October 1 at 10:00 a.m. for its new Applied Science Livestock Teaching Lab — the only one of its kind in the state. The Mid-South RC&D Council will present a grant for a livestock trailer that helps students transport animals to shows, clinics, and sales. Elmore Autauga News
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The U.S. Department of Agriculture has designated 25 Alabama counties as natural disaster areas after heavy rains in May and June hurt farms across the state. Farmers in these areas can apply for emergency loans within eight months of the Secretarial Disaster Declaration — Sept. 15. WSFA 12

- ➤ Montgomery food truck owners say outdated rules limit where they can work — city leaders are reviewing the 2020 ordinance and will meet again in three weeks to decide on changes. WSFA 12
- ➤ Montgomery Regional Airport is holding a mandatory full-scale emergency drill today — testing its response plans for prompt action in a crisis. WSFA 12
- ➤ Today, the City of Montgomery unveiled its Open Data Portal to show residents how the Fire/Rescue Department answered over 32,000 calls and saved over $55 million in property — the portal displays dashboards for response times, incident locations, and other key services to help citizens make informed decisions. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The Alabama Department of Public Health warns about Chagas disease spread by the 'kissing bug' that bites near the mouth—Alabama has seen only animal cases while nearby states have reported it in people. Health officials say the illness can cause headache and fever and may lead to serious heart problems if treatments are delayed. WSFA 12
- ➤ Tonya Gandy-Hamilton from the Department of Public Health appeared over Zoom for National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month—she stressed the importance of knowing the symptoms of the disease. WSFA 12

- ➤ Today, the Central Alabama Sports Commission announced that Alvin Briggs is its new Executive Director to lead efforts to bring major sporting events to Montgomery and the region — he brings decades of experience in coaching and sports administration.
