CULTURE NEWS

  • Local residents can enjoy a weekend of events—such as a ballet performance, car show and festivals—scheduled from today through Sunday.  WSFA 12
  • Alabama State University Theatre will present Nina Simone: Four Women from October 9th to 11th—showing the life of jazz singer, songwriter, and civil rights activist Nina Simone in a live stage production.  WSFA 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • AUM held its 9th annual Day of Giving on Thursday to raise money and collect food and supplies for the student food pantry that always needs donations. Chancellor Carl Stockton said the gifts were critical to help students succeed on campus.  WSFA 12
  • The U.S. Department of Education launched the earliest FAFSA form in history for the 2026‑27 school year with new features that speed up account verification and allow parental input using a special code—this improved process follows a glitch-ridden rollout in 2023 and is meant to help Alabama students access federal aid for college.  Alabama Daily News
  • Huntingdon College has been named on three lists in the 2026 U.S. News Best Colleges Rankings, placing it 5th for Best Values in Regional Colleges-South, 8th overall, and 19th for Social Mobility—showing its strong record in value and social progress.  Montgomery Chamber
  • UA announced that 473 Summer Semester students earned academic honors by making the dean’s or president’s list with GPAs of 3.5 and 4.0 respectively—local students from Prattville, including Duchi Bednarski, Ava Cardona, Mary Britton Hicks, Grace Lassiter, Zoi Moon, and Joseph Penton, were among those recognized across more than 70 programs.  Elmore Autauga News
