COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Montgomery Humane Society introduced two pets available for adoption—a domestic shorthair kitten aged two months named Nel who loves to chatter and a friendly Terrier mix dog aged one and a half years named William. Those interested in giving them a home may visit the shelter for more details.  WAKA 8
  • The Alabama State Games will hold the annual Pumpkin Run and Lot O'fun 5k event at Cloverdale Park on October 11 — participants are encouraged to wear costumes during the fun walk.  WSFA 12
  • Hundreds of women from Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority gathered in Montgomery over the weekend to donate to a local organization — their presence underscored the sorority's commitment to community support.  WSFA 12
  • The annual Day of Dreams telethon—raising funds for Mercy House and the MAP Center—will take place this Thursday, Oct. 2 in Montgomery.  WSFA 12

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Montgomery Aesthetics has served the River Region for 20 years—owner Lauren Bishop spoke on WSFA about the celebration.  WSFA 12
  • BMW has alerted owners of nearly 200,000 vehicles and about 1,500 Toyota Supras to park outside away from buildings because an engine starter issue could start fires; letters will be sent starting November 14 and owners can call BMW customer service for questions.  WAKA 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Stanhope Elmore High School’s JROTC won the state Raider Challenge on Sept 27 at Grissom High School in Huntsville—winning several events—and will prepare for the National Raider Championship from Oct 23–26 at Fort Knox in Kentucky.  Elmore Autauga News
  • The Alabama Public Charter School Commission announced on Monday that it received nearly $30 million in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Education’s Charter School Program—funds that will be used over the next five years to open 23 new charter schools serving more than 10,000 educationally disadvantaged students statewide.  WSFA 12

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Rylee Buzbee was promoted to attorney at Beasley Allen in 2025 after starting as a law clerk and now handles toxic exposure cases in Montgomery—she grew up in Bayou La Batre and witnessed the BP oil spill impact her community. She also volunteers with the Montgomery Volunteer Lawyers Program—demonstrating her commitment to both environmental protection and juvenile justice.  Montgomery Chamber

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The ABC Board has proposed raising the liquor storage fee from 72 cents to $1.50 per case by 2028 to help pay for a new $98 million warehouse under construction in Montgomery—some lawmakers warn the increase could lead to higher prices for consumers. The board is set to vote on the proposal later this month.  Alabama Daily News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Jackson Hospital is starting a new tradition where every baby born gets a handmade stuffed bunny—crafted by nurses and community members that includes the baby’s name, birth details, and a special message. The keepsake honors the labor and delivery mosaic and is already making parents very happy.  WSFA 12
