COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Montgomery's Heart of Alabama Food Bank cut the ribbon on its new $220,000 refrigerated truck on September 30 at 2:05 p.m. in a joint effort with Darden Restaurants' foundation and Penske—this addition will help the food bank serve more people in 35 counties with high food needs.  WAKA 8
  • Last month, Hunger Action Month raised awareness about food insecurity—prompting residents to donate, volunteer, and support local food banks for those unsure of their next meal. Sponsored by the Feeding America Network, the event reached over 256,000 people across 35 counties.  WSFA 12
  • The Montgomery Career Center will host a Community Job Fair on October 3 as Jonathan Mcnair from the State Department of Workforce explained details on WSFA — the event will help local job seekers find opportunities.  WSFA 12

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Montgomery Art Guild and Regions Bank are hosting the 59th annual Art Exhibition with the opening set for October 7. The event will display local art and continue a long tradition of community collaboration.  WSFA 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Alabama Public Charter School Commission received a $29,964,656 grant from the U.S. Department of Education to expand public charter schools statewide — the funding will support 23 schools and serve more than 10,000 students over five years.  WAKA 8
  • Prattville High School hosted its first Mission Day with the Army National Guard on Sept. 30, 2025 after a last-minute cancellation let officials arrange the hands-on event, giving students a chance to explore different military roles. Students took part in interactive simulations such as search and rescue, disaster relief, and virtual reality exercises — each designed to expand their views on career opportunities.  Elmore Autauga News

  • The Alabama Forestry Commission issued a statewide fire danger advisory due to drought and high temperatures, warning residents to refrain from burning and to handle equipment with care—officials said the elevated risk will persist until enough rain falls. Authorities will continue to monitor conditions and may tighten restrictions if the dry spell continues.  AL.com
