- ➤ Brenda Dennis and Davis Wilder of Millbrook told WSFA that the Main Street Scavenger Hunt hosted by the Millbrook Area Chamber is underway—running from October 1st to October 31st for local participants. WSFA 12
- ➤ Sweet Creek Farm Market is hosting its Fall Festival on October 18-19th—featuring many vendors, food, face painting, and hay rides for local families to enjoy. WSFA 12
- ➤ WSFA 12 News's fifth annual Day of Dreams telethon raised more than $220K—supporting Montgomery's Mercy House ministry and the MAP Center. WSFA 12
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Montgomery leaders kicked off the Alabama National Fair on Friday, and the Taste of the Fair event is scheduled for tonight. WSFA 12 News confirmed that its fifth annual Day of Dreams telethon raised over $220,000 for Mercy House and the MAP Center. WSFA 12
- ➤ Bethany previewed the Alabama National Fair in Montgomery, which opened Friday and runs through Oct. 13—showcasing rides, exhibits, and local food for families. Visitors will enjoy the fair's wide range of attractions as it continues to draw local attention. WSFA 12
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Lawmakers delayed an ALDOT contract for the West Alabama Corridor project on Thursday because they objected to using only state funds—Chris Pringle said the project needs federal matching funds. The panel’s delay pauses the contract for up to 45 days—officials noted that construction will continue as planned. Alabama Daily News
- ➤ A new law raised Alabama’s medical consent age from 14 to 16, so parents must now give permission for medical care except when a minor is emancipated, has graduated high school, or faces urgent threats—exceptions that also cover cases of abuse or specific medical situations. The law also requires written consent for school counseling services and went into effect at the start of the month. WSFA 12
- ➤ Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed said his city signed a $60,000 media contract with guestbooker.com—paid $5,000 each month since June 2024—to promote good news about the city. He explained that his TV, radio and podcast appearances, including a role as a surrogate in the 2024 campaign, focus on positive stories. 1819 News
- ➤ Public media lost its federal funding on October 1 for the first time in 50 years after a July law cancelled $1.1 billion in support—local stations like WBHM now must rely on community donations as Congress decides on future funding measures.
