- ➤ The Montgomery Humane Society introduced its Pets of the Week featuring Bee + Bowser. Bee is a 1.5-year-old black cat who loves to watch birds from a windowsill, and Bowser is a 3-year-old terrier mix who lost one leg in a car accident but still enjoys treats, people, and belly rubs, and both are available for adoption at the society. - ➤ Governor Ivey started the 2025 Beat Auburn Beat Hunger and Beat Bama Food Drive at the state capitol Monday morning by giving the first donation at both schools — along with Big Al, Aubie and university students. The drive, run by the Center for Service and Leadership and the West Alabama Food Bank since 1994, will collect food donations until the Iron Bowl. WSFA 12

- ➤ A former Medicaid employee from Montgomery was sentenced to 10 years in prison—she had pleaded guilty in August to approving over 1,600 fraudulent payments totaling more than $100,000 and began serving her sentence immediately. WSFA 12

- ➤ Alabama State University announced it will build a 5,000 square foot YMCA fitness facility on campus that will offer youth leadership development, sports camps and mental wellness workshops—programs designed to provide inclusive wellness opportunities for students and the Montgomery community. The partnership with the YMCA of Greater Montgomery aims to expand access to health resources through joint outreach and educational initiatives. WAKA 8
- ➤ The Gayle Planetarium in Montgomery started a new series of Saturday shows on October 4 and will continue through November 15, offering two daily presentations of SunStruck and From Earth to the Universe. - ➤ Alabama high school seniors will be able to apply to dozens of public and private colleges for free until Friday as part of Alabama College Application Week + over 380 schools are joining the effort to help students from low-income families and first-generation backgrounds by waiving typical application fees and offering direct admission options.
