COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The Equal Justice Initiative opened Elevation — a new convening center and hotel built on the site of the former Hilltop Arms Apartments that sat empty for decades — to offer visitors a space linked to Montgomery’s civil-rights history. Meeting rooms, an art gallery and two restaurants are now open to the public and construction will continue as Montgomery Square will debut in February 2026. WSFA 12
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ After a downtown mass shooting Saturday night, Charles Lee—a youth mentor and hot dog stand owner—took cover with two high school students while urging Montgomery residents to join his mentorship program that teaches job skills and personal development to help youth overcome ongoing gun violence. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Women in Training will host a Multicultural and STEM Festival on October 11th — Adeyela Bennett and Dr. Nandini Ramproop spoke on WSFA about the upcoming event that will highlight cultural diversity and science learning opportunities. WSFA 12
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Montgomery city leaders passed a resolution Tuesday night to support the financially troubled Jackson Hospital by planning to help with funding and urging county and state officials to join in; hospital administrators warned that without additional cash the hospital—which declared bankruptcy earlier—could close by the end of October. - ➤ Councilwoman Marche Johnson has called for a temporary pause to the 2025 CASC Montgomery Gun Show following a mass shooting in the downtown entertainment district that left two dead and 12 injured. She said she will work with event organizers+ law enforcement to review safety measures before the event resumes. WSFA 12
- ➤ During National Teen Drivers Safety Month today, ALEA and Alabama State Troopers are joining state agencies to help reduce crashes and fatalities among drivers ages 16 to 19—urging parents to enforce safe driving practices. The effort targets a leading cause of teen deaths and calls on parents to monitor their teens behind the wheel. WAKA 8
- ➤ Alabama lawmakers will review a bill next session that expands the capital murder law to include fatal shootings like the one that occurred over the weekend in Montgomery + the measure aims to better protect public safety. Alabama Daily News
- ➤ Montgomery City Council member Marche Johnson called for a delay (and review) of the gun show set for November 1-2 at the Alcazar Shrine Center after a downtown shooting left two dead and 12 injured, and she posted her concerns on Facebook (stating the need for stronger gun safety). WAKA 8
- ➤ Montgomery City Council approved a resolution Tuesday to support the financially troubled Jackson Hospital. The council said the measure will help guide future efforts to secure the hospital's operations. WSFA 12

- ➤ The newest LifeSouth Community Blood Center opens its doors today at the intersection of Atlanta Highway and Taylor Road — near Baptist Medical Center East, with a ribbon cutting at 10 a.m. Donors will receive a free long-sleeved t-shirt or, for platelet and double red cell donations, a $40 e-gift card while supplies last.
