At a meeting in Huntsville on Oct 8th, the Alabama Community College System Board of Trustees reported that college enrollment had exceeded 98,000—a 9.6% rise over fall 24—and approved more than $50M for building or renovating academic and athletic facilities across the system.

On Tuesday, the Montgomery City Council passed a resolution to back Jackson Hospital, which warned it may close in 30 days without needed funds.

Officials said the hospital might need a $50 million grant and extra funds for upgrades — support from county and state partners has not yet been secured.

The Montgomery County sheriff, Derrick Cunningham, held a prayer service on Thursday at the First Baptist Church Parking lot on Perry Street as part of National Faith and Blue Weekend—prayers for unity, victims of crime, and public safety officials were offered to set the tone for upcoming community events.

Tuskegee University named Kareem Easley as its new police chief—he takes over from Joshua Phillips, who was relieved of duty in September.

Easley brings over 20 years of law enforcement experience from Montgomery and other state agencies.

The City of Montgomery is planning its Veterans Day Celebration on Tuesday, November 11 at Riverwalk Stadium with events including a parade, resource fair, family activities and a static display featuring retired Maj.

Gen. Clyde A. 'Lou' Hennies as grand marshal and keynote speaker. The event will honor the 50-year end of the Vietnam War under the theme Montgomery Salutes: 50 Years Later, Never Forgotten — Honoring Our Vietnam Veterans and the deadline to enter the parade is October 31.

Montgomery Bicycle Club will host the 23rd annual Glassner Autumn Challenge on October 18 as a memorial ride to honor a friend and supporter of cycling—organizers say the event will reflect his impact on local biking.
