COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Dozens of first responders from across the south started a 420-mile bike ride today in Montgomery to honor their fallen colleagues in the line of duty. WSFA 12
- ➤ A new YMCA facility will be built on the Alabama State University campus to give Montgomery residents a place to exercise and stay healthy. The project will add a modern community resource that will offer fitness opportunities in the near future. WSFA 12
- ➤ The Alabama National Fair on Sunday celebrated our hometown heroes—military, veterans, and first responders—with banners and speeches by local officials like Sheriff Cunningham, Attorney General Marshall, and Commissioner Pate. The fair offered these groups free entry as it ended on Monday. WSFA 12

BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Hattie B’s Hot Chicken is opening its second Alabama location this fall at 3212 Memorial Parkway Southwest in a new project + Stadium Commons built on the site of a former movie theater near Joe Davis Stadium. The restaurant was ranked 14th on a best fried chicken list last year and first expanded outside its Nashville base with a Birmingham spot in 2016. AL.com
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Activists hosted a free screening in Selma of 'The Alabama Solution' — a documentary that shows harsh prison conditions and sparks conversation about reform. Future screenings will include a show in Montgomery at Greater Destiny Worship Center on October 25 along with events in Dothan, Mobile and Huntsville. WSFA 12
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Alabama State Department of Education released a draft of new school counseling standards to update the guidelines after 22 years—this draft sets clear expectations in academic, career, and wellness areas and invites public comment until November 10. A revised version will follow for a 30-day review before a board vote in December. Alabama Daily News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Alabama added nearly 50,000 residents in 2024 as out-of-state moves drove growth, with 26,000 coming from domestic migration and 16,000 from international migration. Madison County saw about 10,000 new residents annually since 2019 and Jefferson led with 3,300 new arrivals + Baldwin and Montgomery also recorded gains. AL.com

- ➤ The Alabama Public Health Department will host a Wellness and Awareness Day on October 17th—offering resources and information to help Alabamians stay healthy. WSFA 12

- ➤ Montgomery Humane Society featured Olive, a 2-month-old snuggle-loving kitten, and Drake, a 3-month-old terrier mix puppy who enjoys belly rubs—both are ready to join a loving home. They are available for adoption at the society if you mention their names at the front desk. WAKA 8
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ The Alabama High School Athletic Association announced that longtime communications director Ron Ingram, who joined in 2007 and led the department for 18 years, will retire effective December 31.
