- ➤ Carl Carlson (93 years old) has helped the community by volunteering nearly daily at the Elmore County food pantry while making peanut brittle for shut-ins, picking up litter, and decorating pinecones to share with neighbors. Nominated by his neighbor Donna Lee (for his long service), he said he may donate the $333 award money back to the food bank. WAKA 8
- ➤ Alabama State Youth Leaders held their first service project on October 12 at Bama Lanes in Montgomery to raise awareness and funds for Hemophilia and Bleeding Disorders of Alabama—an effort inspired by a member’s close family experience with von Willebrand Disease. Fifty supporters from several nearby cities joined the event where guests enjoyed cupcakes, music, and door prizes while the group raised $540 for HBDA. Elmore Autauga News
- ➤ The Junior League of Alabama will host its 37th annual Holiday Market from October 16th to 18th to kick off holiday shopping. The event is planned to offer locals a festive chance to buy gifts—uniting the community for the season. WSFA 12

- ➤ A traveling festival of hope has come to Capri Theatre, where local groups set up booths and fun activities to honor community heroes. The event also showed the documentary 'Leap of Faith' and changed the theatre parking lot into a space for neighbors to connect—reflecting the heart of Montgomery. WAKA 8
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ A graduation ceremony on Oct 14 honored the first students in the Apple Education program—an eight-week course in app design, coding and digital literacy offered through a collaboration among Apple, the state of Alabama, Alabama State University and Alabama Power. Graduates showcased apps addressing digital advertising and food access, and ASU will serve as a hub for future innovation as workforce efforts expand to the Black Belt and rural areas. WAKA 8
- ➤ National School Lunch Week shines a spotlight on the healthy meals provided to students each day across the country. Montgomery Public Schools serves nearly 16,000 lunches daily, adding up to more than 926,000 meals since the school year began. WSFA 12

- ➤ A federal judge approved an extra $3 million in funding to keep Jackson Hospital open for now, providing temporary support as the hospital works toward a long-term solution. WSFA 12
- ➤ A new report by VocoVision finds Alabama ranks worst for school-based youth mental health care—many students face anxiety and depression with few providers available, especially in rural schools where 4 in 10 lack on-site support. Dr. Kathryn Steele said the study urges schools and policymakers to act swiftly to fill these gaps. WSFA 12
